Strategic overview
OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research and deployment organization founded in 2015. Its stated mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. The organization combines frontier AI research with the development and deployment of AI systems used by individuals, developers, enterprises, educational institutions and other organizations.
OpenAI's institutional structure has evolved substantially since its founding. As of 2026, it consists of the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation and OpenAI Group PBC, a public benefit corporation. The Foundation governs the Group, while both entities operate in support of the organization's stated mission.
Its research and product portfolio includes the GPT family of general-purpose models, ChatGPT, the OpenAI API platform, coding systems associated with Codex, multimodal capabilities, reasoning systems and specialized work in areas including cybersecurity and scientific research. In July 2026, OpenAI introduced the GPT-5.6 model family, reflecting continuing development of general-purpose, multimodal and agentic AI systems.
OpenAI also conducts model evaluation, safety and preparedness work and publishes system cards and related technical documentation for selected models. Its Charter establishes principles concerning broadly distributed benefits, long-term safety, technical leadership and cooperative orientation.
The organization works with technology companies, governments, educational institutions and scientific organizations. Publicly documented relationships include its long-running strategic partnership with Microsoft, cooperation with the United Kingdom Government, collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy, and academic programs such as NextGenAI and ChatGPT for Academic Researchers.
