On 18 September 2025, Microsoft described its Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin AI datacenter as on track to come online in early 2026, fulfilling an initial $3.3 billion investment pledge, and announced an additional $4 billion over the next three years for a second datacenter of similar scale — bringing total Wisconsin investment to more than $7 billion. The company says the facility will house hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GPUs for frontier model training and claims training performance an order of magnitude beyond today’s fastest supercomputers. Community and workforce elements include peak construction employment above 3,000 workers, about 500 full-time operational roles growing toward about 800 with the second site, Wisconsin’s first Datacenter Academy with Gateway Technical College (targeting more than 1,000 students in five years), and a manufacturing-focused AI Co-Innovation Lab at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Sustainability design points include more than 90 percent closed-loop liquid cooling, prepaid energy/infrastructure measures intended to protect local rates, and matching fossil kilowatt-hours with carbon-free energy, including a 250 MW solar project in Portage County under construction.
